Opening a Corporate Bank Account in Saudi Arabia: Documents, Timeline, and How Not to Get Stuck

GuideAugust 202610 دقائق قراءة

Everything else in Saudi company formation is a government process with published steps and predictable queues. The corporate bank account is different: it is a commercial decision by a private institution applying its own KYC and anti-money-laundering standards, and it is where otherwise smooth formations go quiet for weeks.

The account matters more than its place at the end of the sequence suggests. Without it you cannot receive payment, run payroll through the Wage Protection System, or deposit share capital where the bank requires it. Treating it as a formality — the fifth item on a checklist — is the single most common formation planning error we see.

What banks ask for

Requirements vary by bank, but the core file is consistent. Where foreign shareholders are involved, the bank will look through the immediate shareholder to the ultimate beneficial owners, and the documents proving that chain are the usual source of delay.

Why files stall — and how to prevent it

Bank compliance teams do not chase applicants; incomplete files simply wait. The stalls we see repeatedly have the same handful of causes, and all of them are preventable at the point of application.

The general manager's residency status is the big one. Most banks want an iqama-holding signatory, and if the GM's residency is still in process, the account waits for it — silently coupling the longest government step to the longest private one. Plan the GM's visa on the critical path, or structure signing authority around someone already resident.

  • Apply the day the CR issues — do not batch the account with 'later' tasks
  • Resolve the GM's iqama early, or appoint an already-resident authorised signatory
  • Prepare the full UBO chain with attestation and translation before the bank asks
  • Write a clear one-page business profile — vague expected activity triggers extended review
  • Answer bank queries the day they arrive; response latency compounds
  • Consider approaching two banks in parallel where relationships allow it

Choosing a bank

All the major Saudi banks — SNB, Al Rajhi, Riyad Bank, SAB, Alinma, ANB among them — open accounts for foreign-owned entities, and the practical differences for a new company are relationship-level rather than product-level: how the bank's onboarding team handles foreign ownership structures, its appetite for your sector, and the quality of its digital corporate banking. A bank with an established process for MISA-licensed entities is worth more to a new entrant than a marginally better fee schedule.

An introduction matters. Files that arrive through a known channel — a formation firm the bank has processed before, an existing relationship — move measurably faster than cold applications. Bank introduction is part of Alpha's standard formation scope for exactly this reason: the account is the step we can least control and the one where preparation pays most.

Common questions

How long does it take to open a corporate bank account in Saudi Arabia?

Two to six weeks from a complete application is typical for a foreign-owned entity. The range reflects bank-side compliance review — it runs on the bank's schedule, and incomplete files or slow query responses extend it substantially.

Can I open the account before the company is registered?

No. The CR is the anchor document; the account application starts after registration. What you can do is prepare the full file — UBO chain, attested documents, business profile — in advance so the application goes in the day the CR issues.

Does the general manager need an iqama to open the account?

Most banks want an iqama-holding authorised signatory. If the GM's residency is still in process, either the account waits or signing authority is structured around someone already resident. Plan this before incorporation, not after.

Which Saudi bank is best for a foreign-owned company?

All major banks open accounts for MISA-licensed entities. The meaningful differences are the onboarding team's experience with foreign ownership structures, sector appetite, and digital banking quality — and a warm introduction moves files faster than any product feature.

Why do bank applications stall?

The usual causes: an unresolved GM residency, missing ultimate-beneficial-owner documents, vague business profiles that trigger enhanced review, and slow responses to bank queries. All are preventable with a complete file prepared before application.

Do I need the bank account to deposit share capital?

Where capital deposit is required for your structure, the bank account is where it happens — one more reason the account belongs on the critical path rather than at the end of the checklist.
